virtual meeting

Virtual meetings will never replace face-to-face events and exhibitions but a growing number of digital tools are allowing those that exhibit to add value to their events.

In 2012, the trend towards more virtual meetings will continue and accelerate. To help prepare for  what’s coming down the pipe, the Virtual Edge Institute – an international organization dedicated to advancing the development and adoption of virtual event and meeting technology – has published its Top 7 Predictions for Virtual Meeting Technology in 2012.

“To summarize,” Michael Doyle, founder and execituve director of VEI, says “the theme is ‘more, more, more’ for 2012, though not necessarily more of the same. Experimentation and ongoing adjustment to digital strategies will be with us for the foreseeable future as we strive to add value to event, meeting, marketing and learning programs with an ever-growing arsenal of digital tools.”

Here are those predictions from the top:

Not too much longer by the looks of it. In the past week, Washington State Convention Center and the Houston, Texas-based George R. Brown Convention Center are offering free Wi-Fi in all of their public spaces for the first time.

Best in Show recently covered just how the thorny issue of Wi-Fi at events is being tackled by a new task force overseen by the International Association of Exhibitions and Events [IAEE]. Read: The Problem with Wi-Fi.

At both the Washington State Convention Center and the George R. Brown Convention Center, the free Wi-Fi service will be a ….

The Problem with Wi-Fi

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

wi-fi logoAnyone who has ever visited a show knows that wireless Internet access via Wi-Fi either works great, works sometimes or works not at all.

The exhibition industry is aware of the problem and for the first time, a task force comprised of convention venue owners, trade show and exhibit organizers are about to look at the issue if Wi-Fi performance and cost. More importantly, how good the Wi-Fi system needs to be and who will pick up the tab.

The task force, which will be overseen by the International Association of Exhibitions and Events [IAEE], which published its own study into the issue back in August.

See our story ‘Wi-Fi: Who Should Pay?’.

Most notable in that study was the clear divide between what show organizers and venue owners think about the subject. Most show organizers (90%) said that attendees should be…..

Wi-Fi: Who Should Pay?

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

wifi zone logoWi-Fi. Take any event in any state and in any industry sector and you will hear attendees grumbling about Wi-Fi access, or the lack of it. If it’s not too slow, it’ll be too expensive or too unreliable. It’s a serious issue facing the exhibition sector.

The rapid rise of Wi-Fi enabled smartphones and tablets means that attendees are demanding faster Wi-Fi. Research shows that 30 million tablets will be sold in the US alone this year, rising to 60 million in 2012. That’s a lot of Wi-Fi devices looking for access at your show.

The problem, of course, is who picks up the bill? Unsurprisingly, there is a difference of opinion.

A survey into the issue by the International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) examined how organizers, exhibitors and facility managers view some key issues surrounding the growing use of Internet connectivity in exhibition centers.

Here are some of the key-findings: Read the rest of this entry »

CES 2011 tron car

At the start of this year we reported on how the country’s leading tech show, CES, in Las Vegas was successful due partly to a large leap in the number of international companies and professionals attending.

Well now, the official audit figures are in from Veris Consulting LLC, confirming that 31,677 industry professionals from outside the U.S. attended the 2011 International CES – setting a new record for the 45-year old event.

Overall, the 2011 International CES welcomed 149,529 technology attendees during its four day run.

Veris is certified by the Exhibition and Event Industry Audit Commission (EEIAC) to perform audits and for the CES event, it made sure that each CES attendee was counted only once, and that show size was calculated using only exhibit space sold, not hallways or bartered space.

“The 2011 International CES was the must-attend event of 2011 and featured astounding innovative debuts including…..” Read the rest of this entry »

Friday, May 6th, 2011

rfid badgeYou may have seen the term ‘RFID’ knocking about and may not know exactly what it means but, when it comes to events and shows, RFID is fast becoming an essential tool for making your attendees happy.

RFID stands for Radio-frequency identification, a technology that uses radio waves to exchange data between a reader and an electronic tag attached to an object – or person – in order to ID or track them. In other words, you probably come across it all of the time without knowing it in your everyday life.

When it comes to shows, it can be a real asset. At the recent RFID Journal LIVE! 2011 show, the technology was used to its full extent, with attendees getting a free RFID badge on arrival.

Apart from instant checking-in, the badge….. Read the rest of this entry »
